Hope

I’ve officially struck it big time I guess.  I’ve been inundated with spammers leaving comments on the blog…I feel so special now.  They seem to be especially enamored with the Studebaker post, so I guess there’s some  keyword there they especially like.  How annoying.

Anyways, this photograph I call hope.  Yes, there is some photoshop involved with it as I have yet to figure out a way to take a picture with both black and white and color. This is actually one of our biggest sellers on the art show circuit.  This photo was taken in an abandoned alley in downtown St. Louis.  This place was out behind the loft I was renting for my first six months when I moved to the area.

The building is the old St. Louis Braid Company, not to be confused with the St. Louis Bread company.  I guess they made thread of some sort since the alley was covered in debris and spools of thread everywhere.  Bars on the windows, with half of them broken out, you get the picture.  Lots of despair.

While looking around, I came across this wildflower (maybe a weed I was guessing) growing in the alley.  It was a splash of blue in a rather dull mute backdrop.  I later found out it was actually a chicory flower. Anyways, I had wanted to try and capture the beauty of this brilliant blue flower growing in its bleak surroundings. But I wanted to put my own spin on the perspective.  So I used the ultra-wide angle lens and got up close and personal.

Problem was, when I got home and downloaded the photo, it just didn’t pop the way I had envisioned it when I took the picture. The drab red brick just wasn’t cutting it.  So I used Adobe Lightroom to remove all the colors except the blue of the flower and it just popped.  Mission accomplished.

Its funny because when I first printed a few of these out, the wife said, “Why did you print those out?”  And I was like, “Why?” She was like, “I’m not really crazy about it.”  So after the first show we did last year, and we sold five for every one other photo, it was a little bit of vindication.  Anyways, I hope you enjoy.  Give me some feedback if you like or don’t like.
