The Candle

Staying with the southwest theme here tonight.  I thought I would have blogged more this weekend but got wrapped up in some other stuff and was mentally exhausted.  That and I spent all my free time fighting the spammers, man this is crazy!!

For the background behind the Antelope slot canyons near Page, Arizona, take a look at the previous blog post called the bear, I go into a fair bit more detail on the how, why, where, of these majestic scenes there.

This shot here was another taken from Upper Antelope Slot canyon.  I think my next post will be from the lower antelope slot canyon.  This shot is another one of the more “famous” views from the canyon.  As the title says, its called the candle.

Unlike the bear this one is a little bit easier to see how it got its name.  The interesting thing is that this shot is of the same part of the canyon as the bear, only a slightly different perspective.  Photography is many times defined as “painting with light.”  And I believe that, as a photographer, you are creating art by capturing the reflected light that we see all around us.

The canyons are a very good example of this theory.  By changing the perspective of the camera and capturing the available light differently, you get a completely different image.  By using the long exposure, slow shutter-speed technique it really give you the saturation and pop of the color.  There’s a slight bit of overexposure in the sand out by the entrance, but I think an acceptable amount considering the rest of the photograph.  You could use some HDR techniques to try and “fix” that but I like it anyways.  I hope you enjoy.
